HDL cholesterol is considered the "good" cholesterol mainly because it picks up the "to much" cholesterol in the blood and transfers it back to the liver where it's disposed by the liver. Having higher HDL cholesterol means lower bad cholesterol in the blood. In other words trying to raise HDL cholesterol will reduce you overall bad cholesterol levels and make a healthier person.
An increase of 1% HDL cholesterol in the blood causes a 2% reduction in heart disease. So when someone tells you that you need to reduce your cholesterol level they are only half right. You should reduce your cholesterol levels but only the LDL's. You should also focus on raising your cholesterol but only the HDL level.
